How do you prevent STAPLE rust in game manual or booklet?

This is a small matter but as I am a collector and sometimes I do trade-in of my Nintendo DS games, some store just drop my trade in value over a rusted metal staple on the manual booklet, there are times when they even refuse the trade-in altogether because of the rust.

Now my REAL question is there any way to PREVENT the metal from rusting? Will putting the booklet or the whole game casing in a *air-tight bag/ziplock* do the trick?

Any tips and insights are very much appreciated, thank you!

You can carefully paint over the staple with clear nail polish. Keep the manual open until its fully dry.
